How to Measure Your Windows

Sliding windows consist of two separate window panels, one or both of which slide horizontally open. Sliding windows with one panel that slides are called single sliders. Windows in which both panels slide are called double sliders.

Follow the Step by Step Instructions Below to Properly Guard Your Sliding Windows
For technical assistance, contact safe-tots.com at (508)757-0820

1)  Measure the height inside of the window frame.
      (Figure 2-1)

2) Measure the overall window width.

  • Be sure to measure single sliders and double sliders correctly. (See Figure 2-1 and illustrations at bottom of page)

3) Measure the depth of the window frame where the posts will be mounted (Inside top and bottom of window frame).
  • If there are shades, blinds, etc. mounted in the frame that may interfere with the guard or if the depth of the window frame measures less than 3/4 inches, the guard will need to be mounted on the outside of the window frame (on the window trim or wall). Add at least 1-1/2 inches to the inside window frame height measurement. The extra 1-1/2 inches is the width of both end posts.

4) Once you have determined the above measurements, you can order online by clicking here

request sizing and pricing information by clicking here.

  • Simply fill out our Sizing Request Form and we will e-mail you with the correct guard(s) for your window and pricing.

5) Once you receive your window guard, install it following the included instructions.

Cautionary Note
There should be no more than a 4-inch opening anywhere in the guarded area. This includes the area between the vertical bar on the window guard and the sliding panel of the window when fully opened. (See illustrations below)

The above drawings show the correct guard installation for the two types of sliding windows.

Since single sliders only open on one side of the window opening, it is only necessary to guard the maximum opening on that side. The above illustration shows a single slider guarded with a 5-bar guard.

Double sliders open from both sides, so it is necessary to guard the entire window opening. In the above illustration, the window is guarded with two 5-bar guards installed side by side.

  1. Large bar (5/8" diameter)
  2. Small bar (1/2" diameter)
  3. End post, screws into top of window frame or molding from bottom or front (4 screws per guard)
  4. Grid assembly, vertical bars telescope to fit various heights
  5. Do not install guard more than 2 inches from edge of frame
  6. Each end post is 3/4" wide x 3/4" deep
  7. Emergency release button (each guard has 4)
  8. End post screws into bottom of window frame or molding from top or front (4 screws per guard)
