How to Measure Your Windows

Double hung windows consist of two separate window panels, both of which slide up and down. Typically, the window is opened by sliding the bottom panel upwards.

Follow the Step by Step Instructions Below to Properly Guard Your Double Hung Windows
For technical assistance, contact safe-tots.com at (508)757-0820

1)  Measure the width inside of the window frame. (Figure 1-1)

2) Measure the height of the opening with the bottom window panel fully opened.
  • If the height of the opening is greater than 21-3/8", window stops must be used to prevent the window from opening above this point. There is also an arrow on the side post indicating the maximum opening height.
  • If window stops are not used, the opening between the top bar of the guard and the bottom of the window panel will exceed 4-inches and create a possible fall hazard.
  • Window stops are available from safe-tots.com under our "Window Safety" link or by clicking here.
3) Measure the depth of the window frame where the posts will be mounted (inside right and left sides of window frame).
  • If the depth of the window frame measures less than 3/4 inches, the guard will need to be mounted on the outside of the window frame (on the window trim or wall). Add at least 1-1/2 inches to the inside window frame measurement. (The extra 1-1/2 inches is the width of both side posts)

4) Once you have determined the above measurements, you can order your guards online by clicking here.

5) Once you receive your window guard, install it following the included instructions.

Cautionary Note
There should be no more than a 4-inch opening anywhere in the guarded area. This includes the area between the top bar on the window guard and the bottom of the opened window panel (Figure 1-2). If this opening is more than 4-inches, window stops must be used to prevent the window from opening above this point.
